Not all supervisors are contacted during our review. If we do not contact your supervisor, that does not mean you will not receive the award.

Once we confirm your position with your supervisor, we can submit your award to be paid. Payment processes are in the process of being updated. We will provide more information here shortly.

Decisions are based on a variety of factors including but not limited to the size and competitiveness of the application pool, how closely the internship relates to the student’s career goals, responsibilities required in the internship, financial need, number of hours and weeks the student works, and other individual factors. Some qualities that reviewers seek in applications are:

  • Did the student reflect on what they will learn from the position, why they chose it, and how it connects to their goals?
  • What financial constraints or limitations have impacted this student now that they are working for little to no pay?
  • How much effort did the student put into their application? Have they reflected on the experience and what they will learn from it? Have they considered how this position connects to their educational experience?

To remain competitive, we highly recommend updating your short-answer responses, even if you’re reapplying with the same position. Showing growth and new insights will make your application much stronger than reusing old content.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate changes after the application deadline, but you can make updates to your application prior to the deadline.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate extensions to maintain fairness for all applicants. We encourage you to apply for the next application cycle if you have another position that meets the criteria. Please refer to the posted deadlines on our website and plan ahead to ensure you don’t miss future deadlines.

First, please review all application instructions and FAQs. If you haven’t found an answer to your question, please email career.vira@nyu.edu.

Eligibility Requirements & Restrictions

You must be working in non-profits, government agencies, social services organizations, and select arts organizations that comply with the Tisch Office of Career Development’s internship policies. We also recommend referring to policies for unpaid internships from the US Department of Labor guidelines for internships and NYS Department of Labor Wage Requirements for Non-Profits.

If you are working in an NYU lab or similar organization on research, you can apply. Independent research or positions supporting an individual professor do not qualify. When asked for your supervisor information, please list the PI.

VIP positions are not eligible, even if they are for zero credit. The VIP Program is a project-based learning course, not an internship or research position. While you will be developing many of the same skills and might even have similar tasks that you would in an internship or research position, VIPs offer many other support structures that other students do not have when they are in a non-credit position.

Volunteer positions are not eligible, but some organizations will call unpaid interns volunteers. An internship has a structured beginning and end date, has a clear job description and goals for the position, requires you to submit an application, and includes regular supervision and feedback. Please communicate with your employer to make sure your position is properly classified.

Experiences must last for a minimum duration of 10 weeks during the fall/spring semester or 8 weeks during the summer, with the student working a minimum of 100 total hours in the fall/spring and 160 total hours in the summer.

Undergraduate students: Minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA

Graduate students: Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

Unfortunately, we are unable to consider applications that do not meet the minimum GPA requirements. Keep in mind that NYU does not round up GPAs.

Yes, the application is specific to the position. However, if you are far along in the interviewing process for a position, you can apply as well. If you do not ultimately accept the position, please let us know ASAP to withdraw your application.

Preference will be given to students with fully unpaid positions, but students receiving less than the award or minimum wage can apply.

You are not eligible to apply if you’re getting credit for the internship.

Remote positions are acceptable for students in NYC. If you are studying away at a global site, you should apply for the Violet Internship Study Away Award (VISAA) and make sure that your visa allows you to hold remote positions outside of the country where you are currently living.

You may apply with up to two positions in order to fulfill the minimum requirements. PLEASE NOTE: If one position fulfills the award requirements listed, you should submit the position most relevant to your career goals. If you must submit multiple to meet the minimum requirements, you will also be required to submit short-answer questions for each internship.

You must be a currently enrolled student or have maintenance of matriculation. Incoming students are not eligible the summer or semester before their classes begin. During the summer students must have been enrolled last semester or be enrolled in summer courses. Students starting in the fall aren’t eligible for the summer award.

You can apply as many times as you like. However, you will only be able to receive this award twice per degree program.

You must apply during the semester or summer when you are working. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept applications for positions retroactively or for the semester/summer before.

Changes from the Wasserman Center Internship Grant

The Wasserman Center Internship Grant implied that only internships were eligible. To clarify that research positions would also meet our criteria, we decided to change the name of the program. Additionally, providing students with two opportunities to apply per cycle helps us to streamline the application and get funds to students earlier.

We will no longer consider positions that are being completed for credit, students must be interning or conducting research in more specific industries, and the new application features a budget spreadsheet and new short-answer questions.

If you have received the WCIG twice, you will not be eligible for the VIRA. If you have received the WCIG or VIRA once combined, you are welcome to apply again.

Funding & Decisions

Decisions are made approximately 4-6 weeks after the deadline, and all applicants are informed of decisions.

Unfortunately, we receive hundreds of applications and do not have the budget to fund all eligibile applications. Decisions of the selection committee are final, and we are unable to give personalized feedback on applications.

For students enrolled in direct deposit, it typically takes 1-2 weeks to see the funds reflected in their account. For students who do not sign up for direct deposit, a check will be mailed to your address in Albert.

Every country has different tax regulations depending on citizenship, with which the University must comply. All international students are required to complete the Sprintax Tax Report in order to process their grants, not to exempt them from the tax withholding. The Wasserman Center reviews and selects candidates to receive the Violet Internship & Research Award, but we do not have control over the other processes. If you would like a more detailed explanation about how your grant was processed and the tax implications, please reach out to NYU Sprintax, nyu.sprintax@nyu.edu.
